Second-time mommy here! I know I am not a super expert at helping kiddos walk but I’ve learned a few tricks along the way that I will say have helped my little tikes get up and on the move.
When Aria was just learning to walk, I didn’t really know what to do, so I kept doing research to find what was the best way to get kiddos walking! Through trial and error, I found some essential ways that not only helped Aria but have also helped Ax, our son, learn to walk as well.
#1 Allow them to get grounded. Before a kid can walk it’s important to teach them to stand. We like having little tables around that they can drum which then takes the attention away from them standing. Kids love this because they are exploring by playing music and strengthening their legs to prepare for walking at the same time.
#2 Allow them to crawl. Crawling too strengthens their leg muscles. A great method is to place your hands behind their feet while they are in a crawling position and allow them to push off! The more they practice this the stronger their legs will get!
#3 Try the walk plank method! When you are teaching your kiddo to walk, create a little diamond between you and another person with your legs. Have person A holds the child up and person B have a fun toy or object for the child, this can be food as well. Bring the object close to the baby so they can grab it, but as they move towards it slowly inch it away until they are on the other side!
#4 Utilize learning and activity toys that allow your child to sit, stand and play and walk! I am such a huge fan of activity walkers. They are great for kids as they are learning to walk. Take some time out of your day to familiarize your child with the toy. Little Tikes 3-in-1 Activity Walker has been such a great help with Ax learning to walk. It has over 70+ activities, songs, and sounds. Plus, we have fun teaching him shapes, colors, and numbers at the same time.
There are 3 ways for Ax to play with this walker!
First up, is the classic walker with a fun twist! It features lights that project from the dome onto the floor, which will encourage kids to walk towards them! Ax has been obsessed with this and it’s so fun to see him excited to walk.
Next, there is an activity panel, which has so many fun features Ax loves, like the peekaboo lion and the animal flipbook. There is literally something for every kid to love!
Last but not least, the walker also folds down for floor time activity, which is great for when the kids still want to play, but Mom and Dad need a little break!
P.S. it also folds flat, which makes it super easy to store. This is a game-changer because it does not take up extra space in our house. As a parent, you know this one alone is worth it!
#5 Dedicate 5 minutes a day of mirror dance time! As babies grow they love to get moving! Play some simple songs and have a mini dance party with your kids in the mirror. The 3-in-1 Activity Walker is great for this too! This will allow your kids to enjoy a fun time with you, explore time in the mirror, but also encourage them to stand and position themselves up, especially when they see themselves in the mirror!
These methods have been super helpful for us, I know that every child is different, but definitely give your child time and be patient! All kiddos are different but learning should always be fun!
Definitely check out the Little Tikes 3-in-1 Activity Walker as a great way to get your kiddos started on his or her walking journey!
